Hello, First, let me apologize for sending this e-mail to you, but I do not know who to contact.

I am bringing a group of 13 members of my family to Kent from 20 June thru 26 June to visit our family's heritage sites in the Charing - Boughton Aluph area.

We have traced our family to William "Atte Welle" who was chaplain of the "church at Pette" as early as 1334. I understand that the small church is in ruins just next to the Pett Place House.

I have written to "occupant" at Pett Place, but have had no response. We would very much like to visit the ruined church during our visit since it is the earliest known building associated with our family.

Can you help me make contact or offer me suggestions on how I can accomplish this? Thank you so much.

"pen-pal" wanted

Received the following request in our inbox - all the way from Tasmania

Hello, I lived in Link Cottage, (on Charing Hill) in the early sixties. I have many fond memories of those times. I now live in the Central Highlands of Tasmania and would be very pleased to correspond with anyone who remembers me.....

I returned to Charing in 1995 for a visit and wrote a comment in the visitors book located in the church, hoping that some one may have seen the entry and contacted me. But to

no avail. I am happy to have my email address disclosed to anyone who would like to contact me.

Edspire Reaches Finals of Second Annual MAD Blog Awards

Jennie Nairn, a Mum of twins from Charing has reached the finals of a prestigious national awards scheme for parent bloggers.
The Mum and Dad (MAD) Blog Awards, sponsored by Parentdish.co.uk, celebrate the best blogs written by British parents. The competition is now in its second year and is supported by companies including Morrisons, Early Learning Centre and TalkTalk.
More than 3,000 people have already nominated their favourite parent blogs in 15 different categories, with five blogs reaching the finals in each group. Blog fans now have just four weeks to vote for their favourite blogs at the MAD Blog Awards website

Jennie’s blog, EDSPIRE has been shortlisted for the “Baby” category, which recognises bloggers who have shared the early days of their babies’ lives with their readers and kept a wonderful record of their babies first year of life full of words and cute photos too. The winning blogger in the category will receive a Tommee Tippee Explorer Weaning Kit and Plum Baby hamper.

Jennie started her blog when her 10 month old twins were born at just 27 weeks gestation. She hopes that her story can inspire and support other parents who have to walk in her shoes. The blog is also a celebration of the lives of Esther and William who are now enjoying life to the full after their difficult start. Esther and William spent their first 59 days in the Neonatal Unit Of William Harvey Hospital, Ashford. A book from Canada

To my surprise the local postman brought a big envelop addressed to "Lovely Charing" this week - it had come all the way from Canada and contained a book:

Monkery Bottom: A Memoir

By John J.S. Roders, who in the early fifties lived in, you can guess it, Monkery Bottom Charing - in an old bus! - with his mother and sister.

In the book John has written down his mother's memoirs from before and during WWII, her short travels to The Netherlands (where John was born) and of course his own, living in Kent (Tunbridge Wells, Charing, Hothfield) before emigrating to Canada in 1961.

If you're interested in Charing's (and Hothfield's) history from just after the second world war, it's an interesting read.

Anyone seen the Golf Charity Banner?

We received the following request for anyone's help in this:

Hi Karin, don't know if you can help with this one.

Some years ago, when the Charing Examiner satirical newspaper was in full flight, the comedian Dave Lee, who has raised over a million pounds for his Kent kids' charity, phoned me and asked if it would be OK for him to put banner on the railings at the crossroads with the High Street and the A20. I checked with the Parish Council, who had no objection and, over the past few years, Dave has put his banner for his charity golf day on the railings.

This has subsequently disappeared and has cost the charity over £200.

Does anyone in the village know where this has gone? It was there, up until a couple of days ago.
