Lovely Charing - Kent

The Charing 10k is coming....

Charing Primary School PFTA in conjunction with NiceWork are organising a 10k running race, (and 1 mile children's race) on

SATURDAY 4TH SEPTEMBER 2010

We are hoping this will become an annual community event, and fundraiser for the school.

All local businesses are invited to be involved in some way. Possible ideas are:

• Entering the race!
• Have a FREE stand on the day (with a suggested donation of 10% of any takings)
• Perhaps donate a prize of a bottle of wine (we haven 30+ prizes to purchase)
• Could you be a Marshall? We need 30 adult volunteers to direct runners and man water stations.
• We are open to other ideas if there is some other way you'd like to be involved!

What are we fundraising for?

Many of you will have seen the huge amount of work that has been undertaking over the last 12 months on the school grounds, both to the interior of the classrooms and also externally. One of our priorities now is to extend and resurface the main playground, and improve the playground equipment for the older children. We are extremely fortunate to have such fantastic outside space and want to maximise its use.

The Return of "The Odd Man Out"

Last years successful Odd Man Out competition is about to return to our village shops and businesses.

The CBA received the following pre-announcement:

As discussed, following the success of the 'Odd Man Out' Competition last year, Charing Primary School PTFA (Parent, Teacher and Friends Association) would like to organise this event again this year.

We would like to run the competition in the week leading up to the Church Fete, encouraging families to visit the shops, further publicise the Church Fete, and raise much needed funds for our school, and provide some fun for local children too!

It was fantastic how the shops and businesses entered into the spirit of the competition last year and I know my children loved it.

 

I would be very grateful if you could publicise this to your members, and on the website, I have put a brief description of how it works below!!

 

Odd Man Out Key Facts!!

 

• The shop/businesses that are participating put something that they DO NOT sell (an 'ODD' item) somewhere in their shop window
• The children of the village pay for an entry form, and over the period of a week look in all the windows and try and identify what the 'ODD' item is
• We would like to run the competition in the week leading up to the Church Fete with the winning entrant pulled out of a hat (of correctly completed entries) and presented with a prize at the Church Fete
• The PTFA would provide the prize (unless a Trader would like to donate one!) Many thanks to Wood You Like who donated last years prize.
• The competition will be open to all children whether or not they live in the village or attend Charing Primary School

Well done Charing Homework Club!

BRIGHT sparks from the Charing Homework Club enjoyed a party to celebrate their success in a countywide competition. Children from the club were rewarded with the party, certificates and medals for winning an annual general knowledge quiz for young people organised by Kent Libraries.

The club is made up of pupils from Charing Primary School, who meet on Tuesday afternoons for extra study support from homework helpers to use books and online resources.

After competing against 17 other clubs across Kent, the group were described as “outstanding winners” by Christine Heald, Kent’s service development librarian for school children.

Fashionable success

From Charing's Primary School PTFA:

"Thank you to everyone who supported the recent fashion show at Charing School.

Bargain-bagging fashionistas were out in force; enjoying light refreshments, a catwalk show & the exciting hunt for high quality, great value clothing. Several of the audience left with many more bags than they arrived with, & there is going to have to be some serious planning if we are to avoid everyone who bought the black sleeveless top wearing it at the same time!!

 

The raffle of the hamper full of chocolate was extremely popular, raising £141 alone- well done Mrs Dorothy Burdick who bought the winning ticket! Overall, we raised £427 towards redesigning the school's outdoor spaces, a valuable asset which we are trying to maximise the potential of.

A special thank you to our brave models, not all of whom were sure they could cut it on the catwalk- you all did a fantastic job (& saved the PTFA from having to strut their stuff!)."

Charing School into Fashion

Charing School PTFA invites you to a ladies' & children's fashion show in the school hall on Thursday 4th February.

Doors open 7pm, show starts at 7.30pm.

Tickets, priced £3.50 are selling fast & are available from Richard's Butchers shop, the Post Office, & the school office.

Free drink on arrival. Chocolate hamper to be raffled.

All clothing available to buy on the night - huge bargains from well known high street stores.

Baskets, Balls and Bouncing for Charing School

Charing School are celebrating a windfall in the shape of a grant from the Lottery distributor “Awards for All” of just over £5000.  The money is being used to buy safety equipment, outfits and goals for the school’s competition winning trampoline and football teams, as well as new balls and hoops for the basketball club. Members of the PTA worked hard with teaching staff to compile a successful bid for funds and were rewarded for their efforts this week when they were given enough money to buy all the items on their wish list.

“We are over the moon” said PTA Chair Sarah Littlewood-Tribe. “This money means the trampoline lessons and club can continue after new safety guidelines are brought in next year, and the football and basketball teams will have the proper equipment for them to go from strength to strength.”

The whole school will be celebrating their good fortune on Thursday, 16th July when children and staff will be able to see and try out all the new equipment. Press coverage would be welcome on the day at 1pm, when there will be an official presentation.

Charing's Primary School PTA sends a BIG thank you to all the Charing businesses for their support of the "Odd Man Out" competition held last week. It has been a great success, enjoyed by many children and their families.

We would like to repeat this leading up to the Church Fete next year, and hopefully we will build on this years success and even more families will take part! Also thank you to 'Wood You Like' for donating the book tokens which meant that the prizes were really good!

Start of "The Odd Man Out" competion

Have you bought your competition form yet? Join in the fun of checking out all shop windows in and around Charing's High Street. You can still buy your competition form for just £1.00 at the School Office.

The competition starts Friday 12th June and runs till next week Friday (19th June) and is open for all under 16's.

Spot the 'Odd Man Out' in the shop/office windows and win the cash prize which will be handed to the winner during Charing's annual Church Fete and Flower Show Saturday 20 June on Clewards Meadow (adjacent of the church).

Odd Man Out Competition

 Collect a form and visit all the businesses that are taking part and find in their window an item they don't sell - the odd-man-out. Add it to your form along with your name and address and return to the School by 3pm on the 19 June.

Open to all under 16's

Odd-man-out competition forms are available from the School office for £1.00 from 10th June (A % to go to the church fete).

Competition on between 12th and 19th June 2009.

Cash prize and winner announced at the Church Fete on Saturday 20th June.
